뚝배기와 흰쌀밥
A ttukbaegi — the thick black earthenware pot Koreans use so stew keeps boiling long after it leaves the stove — sits on its wooden saucer at the edge of a plank table. Inside, doenjang jjigae holds cubes of tofu, sliced zucchini, lengths of scallion and a cluster of enoki mushrooms in a cloudy brown broth. Thin steam lifts from the rim. A small banded bowl of white rice rests alongside, both casting soft shadows across the grain of the wood.

Why this subject
Doenjang jjigae is everyday food in Korea, the kind of dish nobody photographs because it appears on the table almost daily. I wanted to give that ordinariness a still life's attention — the narrow window when the pot is still too hot to touch and the steam has not yet thinned. Rice and stew alone can carry a whole meal.
된장찌개는 상에 오르는 순간이 가장 짧게 지나가는 음식이다. 끓는 소리가 멎기 전, 김이 아직 올라가는 그 몇 초를 정물로 붙잡아 두고 싶었다. 화려한 반찬 없이 찌개와 밥 두 그릇만으로도 한 끼의 무게가 충분하다고 생각했다.
On the style
The watercolor texture does its best work on the ttukbaegi's rough glaze, where brush marks read as the pot's uneven, fired surface. Tofu and rice go the other way, left nearly as bare paper so they stay smooth and pale against all that darkness. Diffused light softens the shadow edges on the table so they blend into the drifting steam, and the muted warm palette ties the wood grain to the murky brown of the broth.
수채 번짐은 뚝배기의 검고 거친 유약 표면에서 가장 잘 드러난다. 붓자국이 그릇의 울퉁불퉁한 질감으로 읽히고, 반대로 두부와 흰밥은 종이의 흰 바탕을 거의 그대로 남겨 매끈하게 만든다. 확산된 빛이 그림자 경계를 흐려 놓아 김이 공기에 녹아드는 부분과 자연스럽게 이어지고, 낮은 채도의 따뜻한 색조가 나무 상판의 결과 된장 국물의 탁한 갈색을 한 가족처럼 묶는다.
