감천 비탈의 색
Gamcheon Culture Village climbs a steep hillside in Busan, on Korea's southern coast, where small houses are built one above another so that each roof becomes the view from the house behind it. Mint, yellow, pink and apricot walls overlap across the slope, topped with silver water tanks, thin metal railings and stairways that run outside the buildings. Power lines cross from roof to roof, and a single pink planter sits on one railing. The ridge behind the village fades into haze, leaving only its outline.
부산 감천문화마을의 비탈면을 가까이서 올려다본 장면이다. 민트, 노랑, 분홍, 살구빛 외벽이 경사를 따라 층층이 포개지고, 옥상마다 은빛 물탱크와 철제 난간, 바깥으로 난 계단이 얹혀 있다. 집과 집 사이를 전선이 가로지르고 전봇대 몇 개가 비탈을 따라 선다. 뒤쪽 능선은 옅은 안개에 묻혀 윤곽만 남았고, 난간 위 분홍 화분 하나가 작게 눈에 띈다.
Why this subject
Gamcheon is usually photographed from a distance, as a field of color. Up close, what holds the eye is structure — exterior stairs, rooftop tanks, pipes and air conditioning units pinned to the walls, all the machinery of daily life left visible on the outside. I wanted the quiet version of that, with no one passing through.
감천은 보통 넓게 펼친 전경 사진으로 알려져 있지만, 가까이 다가가면 색보다 먼저 보이는 것은 집이 비탈을 견디는 방식이다. 바깥 계단, 옥상 물탱크, 벽을 타고 내려오는 배관과 에어컨 실외기처럼 생활이 겉으로 드러난 부분을 중심에 두고 싶었다. 사람이 지나가지 않는 시간의 골목이 오히려 이 동네의 구조를 더 잘 보여준다고 생각했다.
On the style
The muted warm palette cools the brightness of the pastel walls so the color reads as weathered paint rather than decoration. Soft watercolor washes settle into corrugated roofing, concrete block and metal tanks, while the drawn lines of window frames and railings stay crisp. Diffused light keeps shadows shallow at every wall edge, letting the distant ridge dissolve toward the bare paper above.
채도를 낮춘 따뜻한 색조가 파스텔 외벽의 들뜬 기운을 가라앉혀, 색이 장식이 아니라 오래 칠해온 페인트의 두께처럼 보이게 한다. 부드러운 수채 번짐은 골함석과 시멘트 담, 금속 물탱크의 거친 표면을 눌러주면서도 창틀과 난간의 선은 또렷하게 남긴다. 확산된 빛 덕분에 그림자가 벽 모서리에서 얇게 번지고, 뒤쪽 능선은 종이의 흰 바탕 쪽으로 서서히 물러난다.
