A Field of Curved Eaves

A Field of Curved Eaves

Jeonju Hanok Village, in the southwest of South Korea, is a dense neighborhood of traditional timber houses called hanok, and this view looks down across their roofs. Grey clay tiles run in ridged rows, crisp along the nearest eaves and softening into haze as they recede. Between the roofs appear whitewashed walls, dark wooden posts, stacked stone bases, and a tree pushing up green from some hidden courtyard. A low ridge of hills lies pale across the top of the picture.

Why this subject

Hanok are usually experienced from the courtyard, looking up at a single house. Gathered from above, they become something else entirely: a landscape made of repeated curves. I wanted to paint the collective grain of a neighborhood rather than one building's portrait.

On the style

The watercolor handling lifts the heaviness out of the clay tile, turning stacked roofs into bands of grey at different strengths. With shadows diffused rather than sharp, depth is carried almost entirely by how pale each layer becomes. The muted warm palette ties the plaster, timber and stonework into a single quiet key.
