유달산 아래 돌계단
Mokpo is a port city on Korea's southwest coast, and its older neighborhoods climb the slopes of Yudalsan, a rocky hill that overlooks the harbor. This alley is one of those climbs: a stairway of worn stone squeezed between low tile-roofed houses, with terracotta pots set along the landings and a utility pole standing at the top, pulling wires off in several directions. Beyond the roofline the hill rises, its exposed rock soft and pale in the haze. Light falls unevenly across the steps, pooling in some treads and leaving others in shade.
목포 유달산 자락, 집과 집 사이를 비집고 올라가는 돌계단 골목이다. 양옆으로 기와를 얹은 낮은 집들이 어깨를 맞대고, 계단참마다 토분에 심은 풀들이 놓여 있다. 계단 끝으로는 전봇대 한 대가 곧게 서서 전선을 사방으로 끌고 가고, 그 너머에 바위가 드러난 산등성이가 흐릿하게 솟아 있다. 바닥의 돌은 오래 밟혀 색이 고르지 않고, 빛과 그늘이 계단 위에서 느슨하게 번갈아 놓인다.
Why this subject
Hillside towns like this traded flat ground for stairways, and the result is a street you read vertically rather than horizontally. I wanted to catch the moment when no one is on the steps, because that is when the stacking of roofs, walls and risers becomes easiest to see.
항구 도시의 비탈 마을은 평지를 얻지 못한 대신 계단을 얻었다. 목포의 이런 골목은 걷는 사람의 숨을 가쁘게 하면서도, 한 칸 오를 때마다 지붕선이 낮아지고 산이 커지는 장면을 내준다. 사람이 지나가지 않는 시간의 계단이 그 구조를 가장 또렷하게 보여줄 것 같아 골랐다.
On the style
Soft watercolor texture suits stone that has been walked on for decades — the mottled treads and the patchy lime-washed walls hold the pigment's bleed naturally. Diffused light blurs the edge between sunlit and shaded steps so the stairway reads as one continuous surface, and the muted warm palette ties the red clay of the flowerpots to the aged wood of the doors at the same temperature.
수채 질감은 오래 밟힌 돌계단의 얼룩진 표면과 회칠이 벗겨진 벽면에서 특히 제 몫을 한다. 번진 물감의 경계가 돌과 돌 사이 틈, 기와의 겹침을 또렷한 선 대신 색의 두께로 쌓는다. 확산된 빛은 계단 중간에 그늘과 햇빛의 경계를 흐리게 걸쳐 놓고, 낮은 채도의 따뜻한 색조가 토분의 붉은 흙빛과 나무 문짝의 결을 같은 온도로 묶는다.
