Pinnacles Across the Channel
등대섬 바위
This is the view toward Deungdaeseom from Somaemuldo, a small island in the southern sea of Korea. A mass of pale rock rises in jagged ridges at the center of the frame, with pines leaning out of every crevice they could take hold of. The channel below shifts from jade to deeper green, catching light in fine ripples, and foam gathers thinly around the boulders in the foreground. Farther off to the right, a coastline fades into haze until only its outline remains.
소매물도에서 바라본 등대섬 쪽 바다다. 뾰족하게 솟은 바위 덩어리가 여러 갈래 능선으로 갈라지며 화면 가운데를 차지하고, 갈라진 틈마다 소나무가 비스듬히 뿌리를 내렸다. 앞쪽 물은 옥빛에서 청록으로 번지며 잔물결을 세우고, 발치의 갯바위에는 흰 포말이 얇게 걸린다. 멀리 오른쪽 해안선은 옅은 안개에 묻혀 윤곽만 남았다.
Why this subject
Island scenery in Korea is usually framed around a lighthouse or a walking path, but what really holds these places up is the bare geometry of sea-cut stone. I chose a vantage far enough back to read the whole rock mass as a single form, letting its vertical thrust meet the horizontal spread of water.
남해의 섬 풍경 하면 흔히 등대 건물부터 떠올리지만, 그 섬을 떠받치는 것은 결국 바닷물에 오래 깎인 바위의 골격이다. 사람이 걸어 들어가는 길목이 아니라 멀찍이 떨어져 바위 전체를 한 덩어리로 보는 자리를 골랐다. 수직으로 솟은 암봉과 수평으로 퍼지는 물의 대비가 2:3 세로 화면에서 가장 잘 버틴다고 보았다.
On the style
Soft watercolor bleeding suits rock better than almost anything else here — the rust-orange staining and the grey-white faces merge without hard edges, giving the stone its weathered grain. The diffused light keeps shadows shallow, so the ridgelines read as softened rather than cut, while the muted warm palette ties sky and distant shore into one receding tone. Only the green of the near water keeps its saturation, set against the dryness of the cliffs.
수채 번짐은 암벽의 결에 특히 잘 듣는다. 바위 표면의 주황빛 얼룩과 회백색 면이 경계 없이 섞이면서 오래 풍화된 돌의 질감이 생긴다. 확산된 빛은 그림자를 깊게 파지 않아 능선의 날카로움이 누그러지고, 낮은 채도의 따뜻한 색조가 하늘과 먼 해안을 같은 호흡으로 묶어 거리감을 만든다. 반면 앞바다의 청록만은 색을 남겨 두어 바위의 건조함과 맞세웠다.
