사랑방의 서안
This is a sarangbang, the study and guest room of a traditional Korean hanok, where the low desk known as a seoan sits directly on the heated floor. An open book, a second volume set beside it, and a small holder of brushes rest on the worn wooden top. The window to the left is a wooden lattice faced with hanji, mulberry paper that filters daylight rather than framing a view, and the yellow oiled-paper floor catches that light as a soft grid of shadow.
한옥 사랑방 안쪽, 낮은 서안 하나가 장판 위에 놓여 있다. 상판에는 펼쳐진 책과 그 옆에 포개 둔 책, 붓을 꽂은 작은 통이 보인다. 왼쪽 세살 창은 한지가 발려 있어 바깥빛을 한 겹 걸러 들이고, 그 빛이 벽과 바닥에 비스듬한 경계선을 긋는다. 기름 먹인 노란 장판은 창살 그림자를 받아 격자무늬를 되비춘다.
Why this subject
Korean floor-level furniture is built for a body seated on the ground, and the seoan is the clearest example — a desk low enough that reading becomes a posture rather than a seat. I wanted to paint it unoccupied, with the book still open, so the absence reads as a pause rather than an emptiness.
사랑방은 한옥에서 남자 주인이 손님을 맞고 글을 읽던 방이고, 서안은 그 방의 중심에 놓이는 낮은 책상이다. 사람이 앉아 있지 않은 서안을 그리고 싶었다. 책이 펼쳐진 채 남아 있다는 것만으로 방금 전까지 누군가 거기 있었다는 사실이 전해진다고 생각했다.
On the style
Soft watercolor bleeding suits a room whose surfaces have all aged together: the stained earthen plaster and the grain of the posts dissolve into one another without hard edges. The diffused light enters through the papered lattice and lays a diagonal across the wall, never sharp enough to cut. Muted warm tones meet the ochre of the oiled floor, pulling the whole interior toward a single quiet temperature.
부드러운 수채 번짐은 흙벽의 얼룩진 표면과 기둥 나뭇결을 따로 다루지 않고 한 호흡으로 묶어, 오래 쓴 방 특유의 바랜 질감을 만든다. 확산된 빛은 창에서 들어와 벽을 가로지르는 사선으로 떨어지면서도 경계가 날카롭지 않아, 장판 위 격자 그림자가 번지듯 녹아든다. 낮은 채도의 따뜻한 색조는 기름 먹인 장판의 누런빛과 만나 방 전체를 한 가지 온도로 모은다.
