Through the Stone Arch
Seungseonggyo is a half-circle stone bridge on the wooded approach to Seonamsa, a Buddhist temple on Jogyesan Mountain in Suncheon, southern Korea. Rough granite blocks are fitted into an arch that spans the valley stream, and framed inside that opening stands a tiled pavilion with its railing. Tiled eaves of temple buildings press in from both edges, half-swallowed by the trees. Below, the water slips shallow over rock, and dried leaves lie across the gravel bank.
Why this subject
What makes this bridge famous is not the crossing but the circle its arch cuts out of the landscape, and the pavilion that settles inside it. I wanted that framing held still, in the hour when no one has walked the path yet and only the stream is making sound.
On the style
Soft watercolor bleed lets each granite block keep its rough face and mossy seam without hardening into outline. The diffused light darkens the underside of the arch, which pushes the pavilion beyond it back into haze, while the water's reflections break off like unpainted paper. The muted warm palette keeps the grey-brown stone and the rust of fallen leaves from competing within one frame.
