Eaves After Spring Rain
This is a close view up into the tiled roof of a hanok, a traditional Korean timber-framed house. The curved grey tiles are still wet, beaded with rain, and water slips from the round end-tiles along the eave. Moss and tufts of grass have taken hold in the channels, and behind the near roof another eave fades into the pale haze that follows a spring shower.
Why this subject
Korean roof tiles look like one flat grey from a distance, but rain brings out the kiln marks, the mortar, the moss. I wanted the few minutes after the shower, when the roof is at its darkest and the dripping has slowed to single drops. Spring rain here is gentle enough that it gathers rather than runs.
On the style
Watercolour bleed suits a soaked clay surface: the places where pigment pooled read as rain stains, and the untouched paper left white becomes the gleam on each hanging drop. With light fully diffused there are no hard shadows, so the depth of each tile channel comes only from the weight of the wash, while the muted warm palette ties grey clay, earthen wall and timber post into a single damp air.
