백자 한 그릇의 비빔밥
Bibimbap is a Korean rice bowl in which seasoned vegetables are arranged around a mound of white rice and then mixed together by the diner. Here it sits in a white porcelain bowl of the type Koreans call baekja, with spinach, bean sprouts, julienned carrot, cucumber slices and sliced shiitake set in separate wedges around the rim. A fried egg and a glossy red dab of gochujang chili paste rest at the center. The bowl stands on bare wood, its round shadow spreading softly toward the lower right.

Why this subject
The whole point of bibimbap is the mixing, which means this carefully arranged state lasts only a minute before it disappears into a single warm red color. I wanted to hold that minute still, treating one bowl with the same attention I would give a building facade.
비빔밥은 섞는 순간 모든 색이 하나로 뭉개진다. 그래서 그 직전, 재료들이 아직 제 몫의 자리를 지키고 있는 짧은 시간을 남겨두고 싶었다. 건물이나 골목을 그릴 때와 같은 태도로, 한 그릇을 하나의 작은 구조물처럼 바라보았다.
On the style
The soft watercolor bleed keeps the grains of rice from reading as separate specks, letting the white mound hold together as one quiet mass. Diffused light leaves only pale gray shading on the curved inner wall of the porcelain, so the yolk and the chili paste become the only places where color fully saturates. The muted warm palette settles easily into the grain of the wooden surface, where the bowl's shadow soaks in like a stain.
수채 번짐은 밥알의 윤곽을 너무 또렷하지 않게 흐려 흰 무더기 전체를 하나의 덩어리로 묶어준다. 확산된 빛은 백자 그릇의 안쪽 곡면에 옅은 회색 음영만 남기고, 노른자와 고추장의 붉고 노란 점에서만 채도가 올라간다. 낮은 채도의 따뜻한 색조가 나무 바닥의 결과 만나 그릇 아래 그림자를 얼룩처럼 번지게 했다.
