Where the Mist Stops
A cluster of hanok—traditional Korean timber houses with grey tiled roofs—stands along the edge of a slow river at daybreak. The nearest house rests on a wall of stacked stone, and an earthen path runs past it beside a low tiled-capped wall. Behind, more roofs overlap and recede, while the mountain ridge beyond survives only as a pale outline in the mist. The water holds a blurred return of eaves and stonework.
Why this subject
Fridays in this gallery are given to weather and season, and dawn mist is the weather that edits a landscape for you. It erases distance, leaves the near roof-tiles sharp, and makes a village look as though it has no boundary. I wanted the moment when the reflection is fainter than the thing reflected.
On the style
Soft watercolor washes are a natural fit for haze: the farther the form, the thinner the pigment, until the ridge is little more than paper grain. The muted warm palette links the faint apricot sky, the dry earth path, and the blue-grey tiles without any of them shouting. Diffused light keeps the shadows beneath the deep eaves soft rather than black, so the carved brackets stay legible.
