Ridgelines Above the Cloud Sea
Nogodan is a high ridge in Jirisan National Park, a vast mountain range spreading across three provinces in southern Korea. Here the foreground ridge shows its spine of pale grey rock, with wind-bent pines leaning along the crest and a dirt path threading between the boulders. Beyond it, successive summits sink into a floor of cloud, each appearing fainter than the one before. The farthest ridge is little more than a grey band at the horizon.
Why this subject
Jirisan's ridges are long and rolling, so when cloud fills the valleys the peaks are left standing like islands. What drew me was less the cloud itself than what survives above it — the grain of the rock and the stubborn angle of the pines. I wanted the quiet of a high place rather than a display of altitude.
On the style
Watercolor bleed is the natural medium for a cloud sea: the edges of each billow dissolve on their own, so the line between cloud and sky never quite resolves. Against that, the near rock is drawn with firm structure, every fracture and ledge held in place, letting the two textures press against each other. The muted warm palette tints the white cloud with a faint apricot cast, suggesting low, slanting light.
