The Courtyard Before the Hall

The Courtyard Before the Hall

Changdeokgung is a royal palace in central Seoul, laid out in the early fifteenth century to follow the hillside rather than flatten it. This painting looks across a broad courtyard of irregular stone slabs toward a hall raised on a low granite platform, its tiled roof lifting at both ends. Under the eaves runs the green and vermilion painted woodwork known as dancheong, with a gilt-lettered plaque hung at the center. The middle bay stands open onto a dark interior while the lattice doors to either side remain closed, and wooded slopes rise directly behind the roofline.

Why this subject

Most photographs of a Korean palace crowd in on the painted roof. I wanted the courtyard to come first, because at Changdeokgung the ground is as deliberate as the building — stone laid unevenly on purpose, so light never glares off it. The hill pressing close behind the hall says more about this palace than any single detail of its facade.

On the style

Soft watercolor bleeding mutes the dancheong just enough that the pigment reads as weathered rather than freshly applied. Because the light is diffused, the eaves cast no hard shadow, so the stacked bracket sets under the roof come through as drawn structure instead of contrast. The low-saturation warmth settles best into the courtyard, where the edges of each slab soften but the pale sandy glow of the whole surface stays intact.
