Light Across the Ondol Floor
장판방의 소반
This is the inside of a hanok, a traditional Korean house, where rooms are heated from beneath the floor — the ondol system. The floor itself is layered paper sealed with soybean oil, which over years turns a deep amber and takes on a soft sheen. A low table called a soban stands with one cushion beneath it, while daylight passes through the paper-covered lattice windows and spreads across the boards. Faint traces of old painted decoration remain on the beam above.

Why this subject
Most images of Korean interiors look up at the ceiling or out through the door. I wanted to look down instead, because in an ondol room the floor is where life actually happens — people sit, eat, and sleep on it. A single table and cushion were enough to suggest someone had just left.
온돌방의 주인공은 가구가 아니라 바닥이라는 생각에서 출발했다. 사람이 앉았다 일어난 자리, 상을 놓았다 치운 자리가 그대로 광택으로 남는 장판은 한국 실내에서만 볼 수 있는 표면이다. 소반과 방석을 한 벌만 남겨 두고 빛이 바닥을 쓸어 가는 순간을 그렸다.
On the style
Soft watercolor bleeding suits an oiled-paper floor better than any smooth rendering; the uneven pooling of yellow reads as decades of polish and wear. The diffused light matches how hanji windows really work — they scatter sun rather than cast it, so the lattice shadows arrive blurred at the edges. Keeping the palette low in saturation lets the amber floor, brown timber, and grey cushion stay within one quiet register.
수채 번짐은 장판의 기름 먹은 광택과 잘 맞는다. 붓자국이 겹치면서 노란 면이 균일하지 않게 얼룩져 세월이 쌓인 바닥처럼 보인다. 확산된 빛은 한지를 통과한 성질 그대로여서 창살 그림자의 가장자리가 흐리고, 소반 다리 아래 그늘도 검게 떨어지지 않는다. 채도를 낮춘 따뜻한 색조 덕분에 노란 장판과 갈색 목재, 회색 방석이 한 음계 안에서 묶인다.
