새벽 산문
Korean mountain temples are approached through a succession of gates, and this is one of them — a timber gateway roofed in heavy grey tiles, its bracketing painted in the traditional dancheong scheme now softened by age. The doors are open, and through them a flight of worn stone steps leads toward a hall that the dawn fog has reduced to a pale outline. Low stone walls topped with tile run to either side, with a weathered lantern standing before each. Maples in autumn colour press in behind the eaves, and a ridge of mountain fades into grey beyond.
산사의 일주문 격인 문이 활짝 열려 있고, 그 너머로 돌계단과 법당의 앞면이 안개에 흐려진 채 서 있다. 문 양옆으로 이어진 돌담은 기와를 얹었고, 담 앞에는 석등 한 쌍이 이끼를 띤 채 마주 보고 선다. 지붕의 단청은 오랜 세월에 녹색과 붉은 기가 가라앉았고, 처마 뒤로 단풍 든 나무와 소나무 가지가 겹친다. 멀리 산등성이가 옅은 잿빛으로 물러나 있다.
Why this subject
At a mountain temple the gate arrives before anything else, and an open gate is already a kind of welcome. I wanted to hold the view at the threshold rather than step through it. The mist helps: by half-erasing the hall inside, it lets the structure of the gate itself come forward.
산사에 가면 가장 먼저 만나는 것은 법당이 아니라 문이다. 문이 열려 있는 상태 자체가 이미 하나의 환대라고 생각해서, 안으로 들어가기 직전의 자리에서 화면을 멈췄다. 새벽 안개가 안쪽 건물을 반쯤 지워 주는 덕분에 문이라는 구조가 더 또렷하게 보인다.
On the style
Soft watercolour bleed is a natural match for fog, letting the inner courtyard and its steps recede until only their edges remain. The bracket sets, rafter ends and rows of roof tiles are held at full architectural precision, so the near and far read at different depths. A muted warm palette brings the faded green of the paintwork and the orange of the maples to the same temperature under a diffuse early light.
수채 번짐은 안개를 그리기에 알맞아, 문 안쪽 법당의 기둥과 돌계단이 윤곽만 남기고 종이에 스며들듯 물러난다. 반면 공포와 서까래, 기와의 반복은 건축적으로 또렷하게 유지해 가까운 것과 먼 것의 차이를 만들었다. 채도를 낮춘 따뜻한 색조가 바랜 단청의 녹청과 단풍의 주황을 같은 온도로 묶어, 확산된 새벽빛 아래 모든 것이 한 겹 더 가라앉는다.
