Frost on the Jars

Frost on the Jars

A jangdokdae is the open-air terrace where Korean homes line up onggi — large breathing earthenware jars used to ferment soy sauce, soybean paste and chili paste. Here the jars stand against a stone wall capped with grey roof tiles, their shoulders and rims whitened by a night of frost. To the right a timber post and a painted eave mark the edge of a building, with a stone step below. Dry leaves lie scattered across the ground.

Why this subject

The jars never move, which makes them a perfect instrument for reading the weather: whatever the night did, it shows on their curved clay shoulders by morning. I wanted a picture of cold that needed no sky and no people in it.

On the style

Soft watercolor bleed suits onggi well — the glaze on fired clay is never even, so each jar settles into a slightly different brown. Because the light is diffused rather than directional, the frost reads as a grainy crust following the curve of each shoulder instead of a bright highlight, and the rough stone wall keeps its texture without casting hard shadow. The muted warm palette binds clay, tile and fallen leaves into one family of color, leaving the frost as the only cool note.
