The Jar Behind the Dish
항아리 곁의 김치
A shallow ceramic dish holds freshly dressed napa cabbage kimchi, the pale ribs still crisp and flecked with coarse chili flakes, a thin pool of red brine gathered at the bottom. Behind it stands an onggi — the round-shouldered earthenware jar used across Korea for fermenting kimchi and soy pastes — its lid set in place. Light enters from one side, leaving a long soft glint down the jar's glazed belly and pushing the dish's shadow across the grain of the wooden table.

Why this subject
Kimchi is usually photographed as food, but it is really a stage in a longer process, and the onggi jar is the other end of that process. Placing the bright, just-mixed red next to the dull mineral brown of fired clay lets both ends sit in one frame. I wanted the table as it looks when the cook has stepped away.
김치는 식탁 위의 반찬이기도 하지만, 그 뒤에는 늘 항아리라는 저장의 시간이 붙어 있다. 막 버무린 상태의 선명한 붉은빛과, 숙성을 맡아 온 옹기의 둔탁한 흙빛을 한 화면에 두면 그 시간차가 보일 것 같았다. 사람이 자리를 비운 사이의 상차림을 그리고 싶었다.
On the style
The watercolor bleed does its best work on the onggi, where uneven brown blooms read exactly like glaze that pooled thick in some places and thinned in others. The kimchi, by contrast, keeps hard edges — each white rib and chili flake stays defined, so the foreground sharpens against a softer background. The muted warm palette keeps the red from shouting, letting it settle into the same family as the clay and the pine boards.
수채 번짐은 옹기 표면에서 가장 잘 드러난다. 고르지 않게 번진 갈색 얼룩이 유약이 두껍게 흐른 자리와 얇게 지나간 자리를 그대로 닮았다. 반면 김치의 흰 줄기와 고춧가루는 형태를 또렷하게 남겨, 번진 배경과 선명한 전경이 갈린다. 채도를 낮춘 따뜻한 색조 덕분에 붉은 양념이 튀지 않고 흙빛 항아리, 나무 상판과 같은 계열 안에 앉는다.
