Where the Hill Meets the City
성북동 비탈길
Seongbuk-dong sits on the slopes just north of central Seoul, where the streets tilt and fork around the contours of the hill. Here, houses with dark tiled roofs lean toward each other across a narrow lane, their second-floor balconies lined with potted plants. A stone retaining wall carries a stairway up to the next level, and beyond the rooftops the distant high-rises of the city fade into the ridgeline. Rain has left the road damp enough to mirror the pale sky, and a few bicycles stand parked against the walls.
성북동 언덕의 갈라지는 골목이다. 기와를 얹은 집들이 길 양쪽으로 어깨를 맞대고 서 있고, 2층 난간에는 화분이 줄지어 놓였다. 가운데 돌 축대 위로 계단이 올라가고, 그 너머 능선 아래로 도심의 고층 건물들이 희미하게 겹쳐 보인다. 길바닥에는 비가 지난 자국이 남아 하늘과 집들을 옅게 되비추고, 담 옆에 세워둔 자전거 몇 대가 그대로 멈춰 있다.
Why this subject
I wanted a single frame that holds both halves of this neighborhood — the hand-built intimacy of tiled eaves and wooden railings up close, and the glass towers blurring out far behind. The slope does the work: climb one block in Seongbuk-dong and the whole city opens up below you.
성북동은 북악 자락에 붙어 앉은 동네라 길이 늘 비스듬하고, 한 블록만 올라가도 시내가 내려다보인다. 기와집과 도심 스카이라인이 한 화면에 들어오는 그 이중성을 그리고 싶었다. 사람이 지나간 뒤의 시간, 젖은 길이 아직 마르지 않은 그 짧은 틈을 골랐다.
On the style
The soft watercolor texture finds its clearest voice in the wet road, where edges dissolve and the reflection stays unresolved — a deliberate contrast to the crisply drawn roof tiles above. Diffused light softens every shadow boundary so the incline reads as gentle rather than steep, and the muted warm palette ties the grey tile, the weathered timber, and the rough stone wall into one shared temperature.
수채 번짐은 젖은 아스팔트의 반사에서 가장 잘 드러난다. 윤곽을 잡지 않고 번지게 둔 바닥의 물기가 선으로 또렷이 그린 기와 처마와 대비를 만든다. 확산된 빛은 그림자 경계를 흐려 비탈의 경사를 완만하게 눕히고, 낮은 채도의 따뜻한 색조는 회색 기와와 나무 난간, 돌 축대의 거친 면을 한 온도로 묶는다.
