The Pond Draws It Twice
부용지의 물그림자
Changdeokgung is one of Seoul's five royal palaces, and behind it lies Huwon, a wooded rear garden long kept apart from the rest of the city. Buyongji is its square pond; on the north bank a small pavilion rests on a terrace of cut granite, with a flight of steps descending to the water's edge. Faded green and red paintwork survives under the eaves, and a inscribed plaque hangs at the center. Tiled walls and pines close the view behind, while the water repeats everything almost without distortion.
창덕궁 후원의 네모난 연못 부용지, 그 북쪽 석축 위에 정자가 앉아 있다. 돌을 층층이 쌓아 올린 기단에서 물가로 내려가는 계단이 곧게 나 있고, 기단 위로는 다듬은 주초석이 기둥을 받친다. 처마 아래 단청은 녹색과 붉은 기가 남아 있고, 가운데에 현판이 걸렸다. 뒤로는 기와를 얹은 담장이 길게 이어지고 소나무와 활엽수가 지붕 선을 감싼다. 수면에는 건물과 나무가 거의 흐트러짐 없이 비치고, 왼쪽 아래에 수련 잎과 분홍 꽃 한 송이가 떠 있다.
Why this subject
I wanted a scene where the architecture is not the only subject — the pond does half the drawing. Giving nearly half the frame to the reflection seemed the honest way to show how this garden actually works on the eye.
후원은 궁궐 안에서도 가장 늦게까지 사람의 발길을 제한해 온 자리다. 그 고요를 설명하려 들기보다, 물이 건물을 한 번 더 그려 놓는 순간을 그대로 보여 주고 싶었다. 화면의 절반 가까이를 반영에 내준 것은 그 때문이다.
On the style
Soft watercolor bleeding suits weathered granite: the stains and mossy patches on the terrace blocks appear as tonal shifts rather than drawn lines. The diffused light keeps the roof tiles from casting hard shadows, so the ridges read as gentle gradations. A muted warm palette ties the aged brown timber to the sky caught in the water, letting building and reflection settle into one continuous mass.
부드러운 수채 번짐은 오래된 화강석 기단의 이끼와 얼룩, 담장 벽돌의 색 차이를 또렷한 선 대신 농담으로 풀어낸다. 확산된 빛이라 기와 골의 그림자가 날카롭게 떨어지지 않고, 단청의 녹색도 한 겹 가라앉은 채로 남는다. 낮은 채도의 따뜻한 색조는 목부재의 바랜 갈색과 수면에 번진 하늘빛을 같은 온도로 묶어, 건물과 그 반영이 한 덩어리처럼 보이게 한다.
