Light Through the Bamboo
죽녹원 대숲길
Juknokwon is a cultivated bamboo grove in Damyang, a town in South Jeolla Province known for its bamboo crafts and dense stands of it. The stone path runs between walls topped with grey roof tiles, backed by low fences of bamboo lashed horizontally, both curving gently away to the right. Sunlight comes down through the leaves and lands on the paving as scattered pale patches. Deeper along the path the stalks fade into a soft, misted light.
전남 담양의 죽녹원, 대나무가 양옆으로 높이 솟은 돌길이다. 길 가장자리에는 기와를 얹은 낮은 담이 이어지고 그 아래로는 대를 가로로 엮은 울타리가 길을 따라 휘어 들어간다. 돌바닥 위에는 잎 사이로 내려온 빛이 밝은 조각으로 흩어져 있고, 길 안쪽은 옅은 안개처럼 희부옇게 풀린다. 대의 윗부분은 서로 기대어 터널에 가까운 천장을 만든다.
Why this subject
A bamboo grove is usually remembered by sound — the creak and rustle overhead — and a painting cannot carry that. I tried to transfer it instead into the restless patches of light on the stones. The path is shown only as far as the bend where it goes hazy; what lies past it is left for the viewer to walk into.
대숲은 소리로 기억되는 장소인데, 그림에서는 소리를 쓸 수 없다. 그래서 잎이 흔들린 흔적을 바닥의 빛 조각으로 옮겨 놓는 쪽을 택했다. 길이 오른쪽으로 완만히 꺾이며 흐려지는 지점까지만 보여 주고, 그다음은 보는 사람이 걸어 들어가도록 비워 두었다.
On the style
Soft watercolour texture does something particular to bamboo: the stalks stay straight and sharply jointed, architecturally exact, while their surfaces bleed and soften, so the grove recedes into haze instead of ending at a line. The diffused light falls as edgeless bright pools on the paving rather than hard-cut shadows. The muted warm palette keeps the scene from going uniformly green, holding the slate of the roof tiles and the dry tan of the woven fencing alongside it.
수채 질감은 대나무 줄기처럼 곧고 단단한 형태와 만날 때 흥미로워진다. 줄기의 마디와 굵기는 또렷하게 세우되 표면은 물기 있게 풀어, 멀어질수록 숲이 안개로 녹아드는 깊이가 생겼다. 확산된 빛은 바닥 돌 위에 테두리 없는 밝은 얼룩으로 떨어지고, 채도를 낮춘 따뜻한 색조가 초록 일변도로 가지 않게 기와의 회청색과 마른 대울타리의 황갈색을 함께 붙들어 준다.
