마루 끝의 화문석
In a Korean hanok, the maru is a raised wooden hall floor laid with wide planks, open to the courtyard air. Here a hwamunseok — a mat woven from sedge dyed in color — stretches along its edge, its red border framing rows of crimson, yellow and pale pink blossoms among green leaves. Behind stand sliding doors covered in paper, heavy pillars set on rough footing stones, and beams still carrying traces of painted decoration. Through the gaps between pillars, the tiled roof and low stone wall of the building opposite catch the daylight.
한옥 대청의 넓은 널마루 끝자락에 꽃무늬 화문석 한 장이 길게 깔려 있다. 붉은 테두리 안으로 빨강과 노랑, 연분홍 꽃송이가 초록 잎을 사이에 두고 이어지고, 왕골을 엮은 결이 꽃잎 사이로 그대로 드러난다. 뒤쪽으로는 창호지를 바른 미닫이문과 굵은 기둥, 단청이 남은 보가 서 있고, 기둥 아래에는 다듬지 않은 초석이 받쳐져 있다. 기둥 사이로 건너편 지붕의 기와골과 낮은 담이 환하게 열린다.
Why this subject
Hwamunseok mats were summer furnishings, unrolled on the maru so people could sit where the wood was coolest. I wanted to paint the moment before anyone arrives, when the mat alone marks the seat. The meeting of two grains — the broad grain of the planks and the tight weave of the sedge — is what drew me.
화문석은 왕골을 물들여 무늬를 짜 넣은 자리로, 여름 한옥의 마루에 깔아 쓰던 물건이다. 바닥에 그냥 놓였을 뿐인데 그 한 장이 깔린 자리부터 사람이 앉던 자리가 되는 점이 재미있어 골랐다. 널마루의 굵은 나뭇결과 꽃무늬의 촘촘한 결, 두 가지 결이 맞닿는 선을 화면 가운데 두고 싶었다.
On the style
Soft watercolor texture lets the sedge weave read as direction and rhythm rather than countable strands, and the slightly dissolved flower edges suggest a mat long in use. The diffused light falls on the planks as pale, borderless patches, showing where the wood has been worn smooth. The muted warm palette keeps the red blossoms, the white paper doors and the brown pillars within one quiet register.
부드러운 수채 번짐은 왕골의 짜임을 한 올씩 세지 않으면서도 결의 방향을 느끼게 하고, 꽃잎 가장자리를 약간 풀어 오래 쓴 자리의 보풀 같은 느낌을 만든다. 확산된 빛은 마루널 위에 경계 없는 밝은 얼룩으로 떨어져 나무가 닳아 반들거리는 면을 드러낸다. 채도를 낮춘 따뜻한 색조 덕분에 붉은 꽃과 창호지의 흰빛, 기둥의 갈색이 서로 튀지 않고 한 공기 안에 놓인다.
