Where the Path Begins
Haeinsa is a mountain temple in the Gayasan range of southern Korea, and this is the gate that marks where its grounds begin. Broad stone steps climb to a single bay framed by two heavy pillars, the bracketed eaves above thick with layered tiles and fallen pine needles. Rough fieldstone walls run off to either side, and through the opened doors you can see straight to the stairs and railing of a hall standing further within. Moss has worked its way into every joint of the stair.
Why this subject
A temple gate is both an entrance and a frame — it shows you a piece of what lies ahead before you step through. I wanted that doubled view: one roof seen through another, one stair leading to the next. The moment before arrival felt more interesting than the arrival itself.
On the style
The watercolor bleed suits rough stone best here, pooling along the irregular wall blocks and the mossed treads until they read as surfaces long weathered by mountain damp. Diffused light keeps the painted brackets under the eaves from falling into hard shadow, letting the inner hall recede into a pale haze. The muted warm palette ties grey roof tile and sandy earth path into one quiet register.
