발 내린 대청
A hanok is a traditional Korean timber house, and the maru is its raised wooden floor, open on one side to the courtyard. Here the doors stand open and a rolled bamboo blind hangs partway down, screening the garden beyond — shrubs, a soft wash of green, and a small tiled roof in the distance. The blind's horizontal lines fall onto the floorboards inside as bands of pale light, running against the grain of the wood.
한옥 대청의 문을 활짝 연 자리에 대나무 발이 반쯤 내려와 있다. 발 아래로는 난간과 툇마루가 보이고, 그 너머 마당의 수풀과 멀리 지붕 하나가 흐릿하게 걸린다. 안쪽 마루에는 발의 가로줄이 그대로 옮겨 앉아 바닥 널의 결과 겹친다. 한여름의 빛이 세로로 길게 들어와 마루를 환하게 데우는 시간이다.
Why this subject
I wanted to paint the summer rather than the heat. In a hanok, comfort came from filtering light and moving air through it, and the bamboo blind is the simplest instrument of that idea — it softens the sun without closing off the view. The striped floor is the record it leaves behind.
여름 한옥에서 더위를 다스리는 방법은 벽을 세우는 것이 아니라 빛을 거르는 것이었다. 발 한 장이 바깥을 가리지 않으면서 볕만 눅인다는 점, 그리고 그 결과가 바닥에 줄무늬로 기록된다는 점을 그리고 싶었다. 금요일의 계절·날씨 주제로 더위 자체보다 더위를 받아내는 장치를 택했다.
On the style
The soft watercolor texture lets the blind read as a mass of light-soaked fiber instead of countable slats, while the garden beyond dissolves into humid, edgeless green. Because the light source is diffuse, the stripes on the floor arrive with blurred edges — the visible proof that the sun has already been softened once on its way in. The muted warm palette holds the oiled brown of worn floorboards and the faded white of the paper panels in the same quiet register.
수채 번짐은 대나무 발의 결을 한 올씩 세지 않고 빛에 녹은 덩어리로 보여 주고, 그 아래 마당의 녹음은 윤곽 없이 번져 한여름 습기를 머금은 공기처럼 읽힌다. 확산된 광원 덕분에 마루에 떨어진 줄무늬 그림자의 가장자리가 흐려져, 빛이 발을 통과하며 한 번 부드러워졌다는 사실이 그대로 드러난다. 낮은 채도의 따뜻한 색조는 오래 닳은 마루널의 기름기 도는 갈색과 창호지의 바랜 흰색을 한 화면에서 어긋나지 않게 묶는다.
