Three Bowls of Namul

Three Bowls of Namul

Three hammered brass bowls sit on a worn wooden table: dark leafy greens scattered with sesame seeds, glistening strands of seasoned seaweed, and pale mung bean sprouts with one long green onion laid across the top. Namul are lightly seasoned vegetable side dishes that appear at nearly every Korean meal, usually several at once. Behind them, a blue-and-white porcelain bowl, chopsticks, and a striped cloth rest near the table's edge. Faint rings and droplets have soaked into the wood.

Why this subject

Namul rarely get top billing. They arrive in small portions, get refilled without comment, and vanish before anyone notices. I wanted to pull three of them forward, give them the whole frame, and watch how aged brass holds light.

On the style

The muted warm palette keeps the brass from flashing; instead it reads as soft, handled metal with decades of use in it. Diffused light lets the shadows beneath each foot ring bleed into the tabletop without a hard edge, and the watercolor texture merges old spill stains into the wood grain. The bowls' rims and bases stay crisply drawn, so the forms hold their weight.
