Basalt Lane, Woljeong
A narrow village lane in Woljeong, a seaside settlement in the northeast of Jeju Island, South Korea. The walls on either side are built from black basalt — porous volcanic rock cleared from the fields — stacked dry, with no mortar, so that gaps let the island's constant wind pass through rather than knock the wall down. The lane curves gently away between them in a tall vertical frame, with no one in sight. Soft diffused light settles on the upper edges of the stone, revealing how deep each gap runs.
Why this subject
On the style
