종묘의 긴 회랑
This is the long colonnaded hall of Jongmyo Shrine in central Seoul, the royal ancestral shrine of Korea's Joseon dynasty. Standing between the pillars, the view runs deep into the corridor until the far end dissolves into pale light. Faded polychrome painting lingers under the eaves in muted greens and reds, and the floor is laid with irregular stone slabs fitted edge to edge. Shadows of the columns lie across the stone at a slant, marking out long intervals.
서울 종묘의 긴 열주 아래에서 안쪽을 바라본 장면이다. 붉은 기둥이 좌우로 늘어서며 시선을 깊숙한 안쪽으로 끌고 가고, 그 끝은 옅은 빛 속으로 흐려진다. 처마 아래 단청은 녹색과 붉은 기운을 머금은 채 오래 바랜 색으로 남아 있고, 바닥의 박석은 크기가 제각각인 돌들이 이어 붙은 면을 이룬다. 기둥 그림자가 돌바닥 위로 비스듬히 누워 긴 간격을 만든다.
Why this subject
Jongmyo is a place built on restraint — its power comes from repetition, not decoration. Rather than show the building from the front, I wanted the view you get from inside the colonnade, where identical pillars stack into depth. That receding rhythm felt like the truest portrait of the place.
종묘는 조선 왕실의 신주를 모신 사당으로, 화려함보다 반복과 절제로 공간을 만든다. 정면의 건물 외관 대신 기둥 사이에 서서 바라본 시선을 골랐다. 똑같이 생긴 기둥이 끝없이 이어질 때 생기는 깊이, 그 반복 자체가 이 장소의 성격이라고 생각했다.
On the style
Watercolor texture suits aged pigment unusually well: where the old paint has worn away, the edges bleed like water stains rather than breaking cleanly, so the surface reads as time passing. The diffused light lets the column shadows settle on the stone with soft edges, and tones grow paler deeper into the hall, giving the corridor a sense of accumulated air. The muted warm palette binds the red pillars and the cream-colored paving into a single temperature.
수채 번짐은 오래된 단청에 특히 잘 맞는다. 안료가 바랜 자리와 남은 자리의 경계가 물자국처럼 번져, 세월이 지나간 표면으로 읽힌다. 확산된 빛 덕분에 기둥 그림자는 윤곽이 풀린 채 바닥에 눕고, 회랑 안쪽으로 갈수록 색이 옅어지며 공기가 쌓인 듯한 거리감이 생긴다. 낮은 채도의 따뜻한 색조는 붉은 기둥과 미색 박석을 한 덩어리의 온도로 묶어 준다.
