First Light on the Marsh
우포늪의 새벽
Upo Wetland lies in Changnyeong, in the southeast of South Korea, and is the country's largest natural inland marsh. Here the sun has just risen above the far ridge, and its reflection falls as a long vertical band across the still water. A wooden walkway spans the middle distance, with a tiled pavilion standing at either end of it. Dry reeds crowd both banks, and a widening ring of ripples sits near the center of the pond.
창녕 우포늪은 낙동강 배후에 남은 국내 최대의 자연 내륙 습지다. 그림은 해가 산등성이 위로 막 떠오른 시각을 담았고, 물 위에 긴 빛기둥이 세로로 내려앉아 있다. 수면 가운데에는 동심원 파문이 번져 있어, 조금 전 무언가가 물을 건드렸음을 알려준다. 갈대와 억새가 양쪽 둔덕을 메우고, 데크 다리 양 끝으로 팔작지붕 정자가 각각 하나씩 서 있다.
Why this subject
Most images of Upo reduce it to a single sheet of fog. I wanted the moment just after sunrise, when the mist thins enough to let the walkway, the pavilion roofs and the floating leaves come back into view. Placing the ripple ring at the center keeps a trace of something that happened a second ago, even though no one is in the frame.
우포늪은 사진으로 많이 알려졌지만 대개는 새벽안개 한 겹으로 요약된다. 안개 너머의 구조—다리, 정자, 수면에 떠 있는 수생식물 잎—까지 함께 보이는 시간대를 그리고 싶었다. 수면에 남은 파문 하나를 화면 중심에 두어, 사람이 없는 장면에도 방금 일어난 일이 있다는 걸 남겨 두었다.
On the style
The muted warm palette sits naturally on dry autumn reeds, letting each bank read as one soft mass of ochre rather than countless separate stems. Diffused light dissolves the boundary between ridge and mist, so the background becomes a few pale bands and only the curved tile roofs and the railing stay sharp against them. The watercolor bleed does its strongest work on the water, where the light column and the ripples lose their edges like pigment sinking into paper.
채도를 낮춘 따뜻한 색조가 갈대의 마른 황갈색과 잘 맞아, 둔덕 전체가 한 덩어리의 부드러운 색면처럼 읽힌다. 확산된 빛은 산등성이와 안개의 경계를 지워 원경을 몇 겹의 옅은 띠로 만들고, 그 앞에서 정자의 기와 지붕선과 다리 난간만 또렷한 형태로 남는다. 수채 번짐은 특히 수면에서 효과가 커서, 빛기둥과 파문이 종이에 스며든 자국처럼 가장자리를 잃는다.
