아궁이 앞 가마솥
A gamasot — a heavy lidded cast-iron cauldron — sits on a hearth built of packed earth and rough stone. Below it the agungi fire door hangs open, and burning wood throws a low orange glow across the soot and the cracked masonry. Daylight enters from a window at the left, washing evenly over the plaster walls, the wooden cabinets and the worn stone floor. A smaller pot, a few bowls and a long wooden paddle wait nearby.
흙과 돌로 쌓아 올린 부뚜막 위에 무쇠 가마솥이 뚜껑을 덮은 채 앉아 있다. 아래 아궁이의 철문은 열려 있고 그 안쪽에서 장작이 붉게 타들어가, 솥 둘레의 검은 그을음과 돌 틈까지 희미한 주홍빛이 번진다. 왼쪽 창에서 들어온 빛은 갈라진 회벽을 타고 내려와 나무 찬장과 돌바닥을 고르게 적신다. 곁에는 작은 솥과 그릇 몇 점, 긴 나무주걱이 놓여 있어 불을 돌보던 손길이 방금 지나간 듯하다.
Why this subject
In a traditional Korean kitchen the agungi did two jobs at once: it cooked the rice above and sent its smoke under the floor of the adjoining room, heating the ondol. I wanted to show that quiet double life at a moment when no one is tending it — the hottest point in the house also being the stillest.
가마솥은 밥을 짓는 그릇이면서 동시에 방을 데우는 장치다. 아궁이 하나가 부엌과 구들을 함께 책임지던 구조를, 사람 없이 불만 남은 순간으로 보여주고 싶었다. 가장 뜨거운 자리가 가장 조용하다는 점이 이 소재의 핵심이라고 생각했다.
On the style
The soft watercolor bloom turns the cracked plaster and the gritty hearth stone into stains rather than drawn lines, so the surfaces read as decades of handling. Diffused light is strongest at the window and thins as it travels toward the pot, leaving the fire inside the hearth as the one saturated note in the frame. The muted warm palette keeps the iron from going flatly black, pulling it toward a smoked brown instead.
수채 번짐은 회벽의 균열과 부뚜막 돌의 거친 입자를 선으로 긋지 않고 얼룩으로 만들어, 손때와 세월이 쌓인 표면처럼 보이게 한다. 확산된 빛은 창가에서 가장 밝고 솥 쪽으로 갈수록 묽어져, 아궁이 속 불빛만이 유일하게 선명한 색으로 남는다. 낮은 채도의 따뜻한 색조는 무쇠의 검정을 완전한 검정으로 떨어뜨리지 않고 그을린 갈색 쪽으로 끌어당긴다.
