툇마루에 든 빛
A toenmaru is the narrow wooden veranda that runs along the outer rooms of a hanok, a traditional Korean timber house. Neither inside nor outside, it is where people sit to take off their shoes, dry peppers, or simply watch the courtyard. Here the afternoon sun enters at a low angle, laying the shadow of a column across pine boards polished by decades of use. The lattice doors are propped half open and the stone step below is empty.
한옥 안채와 마당 사이에 걸친 좁은 툇마루에 오후 햇빛이 비스듬히 들어와 있다. 기둥과 문설주가 만든 그림자가 마루널의 결을 가로질러 길게 누웠고, 오래 닦인 소나무 널은 결마다 다른 밝기로 빛을 받는다. 댓돌 위는 비어 있고 분합문은 반쯤 들려 있어, 방금 누가 지나간 자리처럼 보인다. 처마 끝이 잘라낸 하늘은 화면 위쪽에만 얇게 남았다.
Why this subject
툇마루는 방도 마당도 아닌 중간 지대이고, 한옥에서 가장 오래 앉게 되는 자리다. 그 쓸모가 빛으로만 드러나는 시간을 그리고 싶었다. 사람을 비우면 마루의 닳은 정도와 빛의 각도가 대신 그 자리에 앉았던 시간을 말해준다.
On the style
수채 질감은 오래 기름칠된 마루널의 반들거림과 잘 맞는다. 안료가 번진 자리가 나뭇결을 따라 짙고 옅게 갈라져, 붓으로 칠했다기보다 세월이 닦아놓은 표면처럼 보인다. 확산된 빛 덕분에 기둥 그림자의 가장자리가 마루 위에서 서서히 풀리고, 낮은 채도의 따뜻한 색조가 소나무의 누런 기운과 흙벽의 회백색 사이를 무리 없이 이어준다. 2:3 세로 화면은 처마와 마루, 댓돌을 위에서 아래로 차례로 쌓아 한옥의 층을 그대로 보여준다.
