Songgwangsa is one of Korea's great Seon (Zen) monasteries, set in the forested folds of Mount Jogyesan in Suncheon, on the country's southern coast. Visitors reach the temple precinct by crossing this covered bridge: stone piers carry a gently arched timber deck, and above it sits a small pavilion with a tiled roof and painted dancheong beams. A carved name plaque hangs beneath the eaves. The stream runs shallow enough to show the gravel bed, and the bridge's shadow spreads across it.
순천 조계산 자락 송광사 앞 계곡을 가로지르는 지붕 덮인 다리다. 석축 교각 위로 완만한 아치를 그리며 난간이 이어지고, 그 위에 기와지붕과 단청을 올린 누각이 얹혀 있다. 처마 아래 걸린 편액과 초록빛이 남은 단청이 흐린 빛 속에서 차분하게 가라앉는다. 물은 얕아 바닥의 자갈이 비치고, 기둥과 지붕의 그림자가 수면에 길게 번진다.
Why this subject
Most bridges are things you pass over without noticing. This one is built to be lingered in — a roofed corridor suspended above running water, slowing the approach to the monastery. I wanted the reflection in the frame too, so the crossing reads as a pause rather than a passage.
다리는 보통 지나가는 곳이지만 이 다리는 머무는 곳에 가깝다. 지붕이 덮인 통로가 계곡 위에 떠 있다는 구조 자체가 산사로 들어가는 문턱을 느리게 만든다. 물에 비친 모습까지 한 화면에 담아 건널 때의 그 유예를 그려보고 싶었다.
On the style
Soft watercolor bleed keeps every roof tile ridge and masonry joint legible while letting the surfaces hold moisture. The diffused light means the shade under the deck never turns black; it mixes with the water and the pebbles stay visible through it. The muted warm palette cools the green and red of the dancheong into something weathered, closer to the grain of long-exposed timber.
수채의 번짐이 기와 골과 석축 돌 하나하나의 윤곽을 유지하면서도 표면의 습기를 머금게 한다. 확산된 빛 덕에 다리 아래 그늘이 검게 떨어지지 않고 물빛과 섞여 바닥 자갈까지 비쳐 보인다. 채도를 낮춘 따뜻한 색조는 단청의 초록과 붉은 기둥을 가라앉혀, 오래 비바람을 맞은 목재의 결로 읽히게 한다.
