The Bridge You Walk Through
우화각 아래 물소리
Songgwangsa, on the slopes of Mount Jogyesan in Suncheon, is one of Korea's three principal Buddhist temples, and visitors reach it by crossing Uhwagak — a covered bridge built over a mountain stream. A wooden pavilion rests directly on a stone arch, so the crossing happens under a roof, in shadow, with the water audible below. The curve of the arch and its reflection almost close into a circle on the surface of the stream. No one is on the bridge here, which lets it be seen for what it is: a doorway laid horizontally across running water.
순천 조계산 자락 송광사로 들어서는 길목에는 계곡을 가로지르는 지붕 덮인 다리, 우화각이 놓여 있다. 돌로 쌓은 무지개 모양 홍예 위에 목조 누각을 얹어, 다리를 건너는 짧은 순간마저 처마 아래에 들게 했다. 아래로는 신평천 물이 흐르고, 그 수면에 다리의 곡선과 기둥이 흔들리며 겹친다. 사람 없는 이른 시간, 물소리만 남은 화면으로 그렸다.
Why this subject
절 마당이나 대웅전이 아니라 절로 들어가기 직전의 통로를 골랐다. 우화각은 속세에서 산문 안으로 넘어가는 경계를 건축으로 만들어 둔 장치이고, 그 짧은 통과 의례가 송광사에서 가장 기억에 남는 장면이라고 생각했다. 건너가는 사람을 지우면 다리 자체가 무엇을 하고 있는지가 보인다.
On the style
수채 번짐은 오래된 목조 난간과 기둥의 나뭇결, 물때가 앉은 홍예 석축에 잘 맞는다. 형태는 건축적으로 정확히 잡되 표면만 풀어 두어 다리가 계곡 위에 오래 서 있었다는 시간의 두께를 냈다. 확산된 빛은 지붕 아래 그늘과 바깥 물빛 사이의 경계를 뭉개서, 다리 안쪽이 어둡게 잠기지 않고 은은하게 밝아지도록 했다. 낮은 채도의 따뜻한 색조는 단청이 바랜 목재와 계곡의 서늘한 물빛을 한 화면에서 부딪히지 않게 묶어 준다.
