Silver Grass on the Ridge
억새가 덮은 가을 능선
Each autumn, hillsides across Korea disappear under eulsae, a tall silver grass whose feathery plumes turn entire slopes pale and luminous. Places like Mindungsan and Hwawangsan draw crowds for it, but the grass grows on almost any ridge once the air turns dry. Here the slope is painted in soft watercolor washes, individual stems dissolving into a single drifting mass that leans with the wind. A narrow footpath cuts through, empty, holding the quiet of the season.
가을이 깊어지면 산등성이는 억새 하나로 덮인다. 사람 키를 넘긴 줄기들이 비탈을 따라 한 방향으로 누웠다가 다시 일어서고, 이삭 끝에 붙은 잔털이 빛을 머금어 능선 전체가 은빛으로 흐려진다. 화면은 세로로 길게 잡아 비탈의 경사와 그 위로 이어지는 하늘의 여백을 함께 담았다. 억새밭을 가로지르는 좁은 흙길만이 이곳에 사람이 다녀갔음을 알려준다.
Why this subject
명선봉이나 화왕산, 민둥산처럼 이름난 억새 군락이 아니어도 가을의 한국 산비탈에는 어디든 억새가 선다. 특정 명소의 전경 대신 어느 능선에나 있을 법한 한 자락을 골라, 계절이 풍경을 통째로 바꿔놓는 순간을 담고 싶었다. 금요일의 계절·날씨 주제로 가장 먼저 떠오른 장면이었다.

억새는 형태가 뚜렷한 건축물과 달리 수만 개의 가는 선으로 이루어진 덩어리라, 수채 번짐이 개별 줄기를 뭉개면서도 이삭의 방향성만은 남긴다. 확산된 빛은 역광으로 들어와 이삭의 잔털에 걸리고, 그림자가 또렷하지 않은 덕분에 비탈 전체가 균일한 은빛 면으로 떠오른다. 채도를 낮춘 따뜻한 색조는 억새의 마른 갈색과 은백색 사이를 오가며, 가을 끝자락 특유의 바래고 건조한 질감을 만든다.
