억새가 눕는 언덕
Across Korea's hills, autumn arrives as eoksae — silver grass, a tall plume grass that turns whole slopes the color of dry straw and white feathers. Here the wind presses every stalk in one direction, with rust-toned shrubs scattered through the sweep. Past the near ridge, low mountains recede in paling blue layers, and a few small white buildings mark a valley town far below.
가을 언덕 하나가 통째로 억새밭이다. 바람이 한 방향으로 불어 이삭들이 비스듬히 누웠고, 흰 깃털 같은 이삭 사이로 마른 잎과 붉게 바랜 관목이 드문드문 섞여 있다. 능선 너머로는 낮은 산들이 겹겹이 물러나며 옅어지고, 그 사이 분지에 흰 건물 몇 채가 작게 보인다. 하늘은 높고 구름은 얇게 깔려 있다.
Why this subject
Silver grass announces the season not with color but with light — the plumes catch it and release it as the wind moves through. I wanted to paint that rather than the more obvious red maples, because the shimmer of a grass slope is what stays with you after the hike. The whole field becomes a record of wind that has already passed.
억새는 꽃이 아니라 이삭이어서, 색으로 눈을 끄는 대신 빛을 받아 반사하는 방식으로 계절을 알린다. 가을 산의 단풍보다 이 희끗한 물결이 더 오래 기억에 남는 쪽이라 생각해 골랐다. 바람이 지나간 흔적이 식물의 자세로 남아 있는 순간을 그리고 싶었다.
On the style
Soft watercolor texture suits the feathered edges of the plumes, letting a mass of grass read as weightless without counting individual stalks. Diffused light settles only on the upper surfaces, leaving the tangle of stems below in dim green. The muted warm palette lets dry straw beige and distant blue-grey sit together, so depth comes from temperature rather than contrast.
부드러운 수채 질감은 억새 이삭의 솜털 같은 가장자리와 잘 맞아, 한 올 한 올을 세지 않고도 무더기 전체가 가볍게 흔들리는 느낌을 만든다. 확산된 빛은 이삭 윗면에만 얇게 얹혀 흰빛을 띠게 하고 아래쪽 줄기 사이는 어둑한 초록으로 남겨 두었다. 채도를 낮춘 따뜻한 색조 덕분에 마른 풀의 베이지와 먼 산의 푸른 회색이 서로를 밀어내지 않고 한 화면에서 거리를 만든다.
