Brass Set, Before the Meal

Yugi is Korean tableware forged from hammered bronze-brass, traditionally brought out for holidays and ancestral rites and polished until it glows. Here a spoon, a footed rice bowl and a pair of chopsticks sit on a bare wooden table against a rough plastered wall. The bowl is empty, its interior catching a pale band of light; the chopsticks lie parallel on a small rest. The metal is unevenly toned — bright along the rims, dusky in the hollows — the way brass ages under daily use.

Why this subject
For a food still life I wanted the moment before food, not the food itself. An empty bowl carries the weight of a meal more clearly than a full one does. Yugi also belongs to a particular kind of Korean memory: the set taken down from a shelf, cleaned, and set out in advance of a gathering.
음식 정물의 날이지만 음식을 담기 전의 상태를 택했다. 상을 차리기 직전, 혹은 다 물린 뒤의 빈 그릇이 오히려 한 끼의 무게를 또렷하게 보여준다고 생각했다. 놋그릇은 명절이나 제사처럼 특별한 날에 꺼내 닦아 놓던 기억과 붙어 있어서, 그 기다리는 시간을 그리고 싶었다.
On the style
The muted warm palette keeps the brass from reading as showy gold; it settles instead into a dull, lived-in bronze. Soft diffused light lets the highlight inside the bowl break off gently, like untouched paper, and the shadows across the table spread without hard edges. The background is left as loose watercolor bloom, so the grainy plaster recedes and the precisely drawn vessels come forward.
낮은 채도의 따뜻한 색조가 유기 특유의 누런빛과 만나 금빛이 번쩍이지 않고 가라앉은 황동색으로 잦아든다. 확산된 빛이라 그릇 안쪽 하이라이트는 흰 종이를 남긴 듯 부드럽게 끊기고, 상 위로 떨어진 그림자도 경계 없이 번져 나간다. 뒷벽은 수채 얼룩을 그대로 살려 거친 회벽의 입자감을 내고, 그 흐릿한 면 덕분에 또렷하게 그린 그릇의 윤곽이 앞으로 떠오른다.
