Lanes Above the Harbor
동피랑 지붕길
Dongpirang sits on a steep slope directly behind Gangguan harbor in Tongyeong, a port city on the southern coast of Korea. Narrow lanes switchback up the hill between small concrete houses, their flat and slated roofs overlapping like terraces, with the sea sky opening through the gaps. The village was marked for clearance in 2007 and survived because artists covered its walls with murals, now faded a tone or two by salt wind. Emptied of visitors, the climb reads as what it is: a working neighborhood built on rock too steep for anything else.
통영 강구안 뒤편 언덕을 따라 좁은 골목이 몇 차례 꺾이며 올라간다. 시멘트 담과 계단, 낮게 이어진 슬래브 지붕들이 층층이 겹쳐 마을 전체가 하나의 경사면처럼 보인다. 지붕 사이로 항구 쪽 하늘이 열리고, 담벼락 벽화의 색은 오래 바람을 맞아 한 톤씩 가라앉아 있다. 오가는 사람이 없는 시간, 골목은 바다에서 올라온 빛만 받고 있다.
Why this subject
동피랑은 2007년 철거 계획이 세워졌다가 벽화로 남게 된 마을이다. 관광지로 알려진 뒤에도 이곳의 본질은 경사지에 얹힌 살림집과 그 사이를 지나는 좁은 길이라고 생각해, 벽화가 아니라 지붕의 높낮이와 골목의 꺾임을 화면의 중심에 두었다. 사람을 비우고 나면 이 마을이 원래 어떤 지형 위에 세워졌는지가 드러난다.

수채 번짐은 오래된 시멘트 담의 얼룩과 페인트가 바랜 지붕 표면에 잘 얹힌다. 형태는 건축적으로 정확하게 잡아 계단의 단수와 처마 각도를 남기되, 색은 낮은 채도의 따뜻한 쪽으로 눌러 벽화의 원색이 세월에 삭은 상태를 표현했다. 확산된 빛은 경사면을 따라 지붕에서 지붕으로 옮겨가며, 골목 안쪽에만 옅은 그늘을 남긴다. 2:3 세로 화면은 언덕을 올라가는 길의 수직 상승을 그대로 받는다.
