무섬마을 물돌이
Museom Village, in the inland province of Gyeongsangbuk-do, is a small settlement of traditional Korean houses built on a sandbank where the Naeseongcheon stream loops almost entirely around it. For generations the only way in was a narrow single-log bridge laid across the shallows. Here the tiled and thatched roofs are seen from the far bank, their long eaves lying low against the slope while white sand and thin water stretch below. The afternoon light arrives diffused, bouncing off the river so that the whole village seems to be lit from underneath.
영주 무섬마을은 내성천이 마을을 감싸고 돌아 삼면이 물로 둘러싸인 곳이다. 그림은 강 건너편에서 마을 쪽을 바라본 시선으로, 기와집과 초가가 낮은 언덕을 따라 앉고 그 아래로 흰 모래톱과 얕은 물길이 이어진다. 처마 선은 길게 누워 있고 흙벽은 오래 볕을 받은 색으로 남았다. 늦은 오후의 빛이 강물 위에 얇게 깔려 마을 전체가 물에 한 겹 더 비친다.
Why this subject
무섬마을의 한옥은 건물 하나하나보다 물과 모래가 만든 지형 위에 앉은 배치가 먼저 보이는 곳이다. 고궁의 정연한 축선과는 다른, 강의 곡선에 따라 자연스럽게 자리 잡은 살림집의 질서를 담고 싶었다. 외나무다리를 건너야 닿던 시절의 고립감이 지금도 물가에 남아 있다고 느껴 그 거리감을 화면에 두었다.
On the style
건축적으로 정확한 형태를 유지하는 원칙 덕분에 기와의 완만한 처마 곡선과 초가지붕의 두툼한 부피가 뭉개지지 않고 남았고, 그 위에 얹힌 수채 번짐이 흙벽과 모래톱을 같은 결로 이어 준다. 확산된 빛은 강 수면에서 반사되어 처마 아래 그늘까지 옅게 들어가므로 이 마을에는 짙은 그림자가 거의 생기지 않는다. 낮은 채도의 따뜻한 색조는 황토벽과 마른 볏짚, 강바닥의 흰 모래가 본래 지닌 색과 맞아떨어져 계절을 늦가을 어딘가로 붙잡아 둔다.
