무섬마을 물가의 집
Museom Village in Yeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, stands on a sandy bend where the Naeseongcheon stream curves almost all the way around it. Layered tile roofs step back from the riverbank, their timber frames and pale plaster panels facing the water across a stone-and-tile boundary wall. A narrow wooden gate sits closed between wall sections, and worn steps descend toward the shallows. The river carries the colors of the walls downward in long, trembling reflections.
영주 무섬마을은 내성천이 마을을 둥글게 휘감아 도는 물돌이 지형 위에 앉아 있다. 그림에는 기와 처마가 겹겹이 어긋나며 이어진 한옥들이 강 쪽으로 면을 열고, 그 아래로 막돌을 쌓은 축대와 기와를 얹은 담장이 길게 둘러 있다. 담 사이로는 나무 널을 댄 작은 문이 닫힌 채 보이고, 돌계단이 물가로 내려선다. 강물은 잔잔히 흔들리며 담장과 지붕의 색을 길게 끌어당겨 비춘다.
Why this subject
Museom is usually photographed from its famous single-log footbridge, but what struck me was how little ground separates the houses from the stream — one embankment, one wall, then water. I wanted to show the village as a place where domestic architecture lives at the river's edge rather than above it. The reflection does half the describing.
무섬마을을 떠올리면 대개 외나무다리를 먼저 그리지만, 이곳이 특별한 이유는 집과 강 사이의 거리가 아주 짧다는 데 있다. 축대 한 겹, 담장 한 겹을 사이에 두고 살림집이 바로 물을 마주 보는 배치를 담고 싶었다. 물이 집을 받아 적는 순간이 이 마을의 성격을 가장 잘 보여준다고 생각했다.
On the style
The soft watercolor bleed lets the grey-blue roof tiles and the ochre stonework seep slightly into each other, so the surfaces read as weathered rather than newly cut. Diffused light leaves only thin grey layers beneath the overlapping eaves, turning the roofline into rhythm instead of hard geometry. The muted warm palette dissolves a second time on the water, where wall color and ripple become the same substance.
부드러운 수채 번짐은 기와골의 둔탁한 회청색과 황토빛 담장 벽면이 서로 스며들게 만들어, 오래 손본 집의 표면이 단단하면서도 누그러져 보이게 한다. 확산된 빛은 겹쳐진 처마 아래에 짙은 그림자 대신 옅은 회색 층만 남겨, 지붕이 몇 겹인지 세는 대신 겹의 리듬을 보게 한다. 낮은 채도의 따뜻한 색조는 강물 위에서 한 번 더 풀려 반사된 벽색이 물결에 녹아드는 구간을 만든다.
