Two Ears Above the Fields
말의 귀, 마이산
In the inland county of Jinan, about three hours south of Seoul, two bare rock peaks stand abruptly above flat rice fields. Koreans call them Maisan, "Horse Ears Mountain," for the obvious reason. The stone is conglomerate — ancient riverbed pebbles cemented together — and centuries of weathering have left the cliffs pocked with shallow caves. Here a thin morning mist cuts the base loose, so only the two ears seem to float.
진안 들녘 한가운데에서 두 개의 바위 봉우리가 솟아 있다. 동쪽의 숫마이봉과 서쪽의 암마이봉은 자갈이 박힌 역암 덩어리라, 가까이 보면 표면이 곰보처럼 움푹움푹 파여 있다. 화면은 아래쪽 논밭과 잡목 숲을 넓게 깔고 그 위로 두 봉우리를 세워, 평지에서 갑자기 치솟는 높이의 낙차를 그대로 남겼다. 이른 아침의 옅은 안개가 산허리를 감아 두 귀만 공중에 떠 있는 것처럼 보인다.
Why this subject
산이라기보다 땅에서 뽑아 올린 두 개의 덩어리에 가까운 형상이어서, 능선이 흐르는 보통의 산 그림과는 다른 화면을 만들 수 있다고 보았다. 역암이라는 독특한 암질이 만든 표면의 구멍들을 수채로 옮기면 어떤 질감이 나올지 확인하고 싶었다.
On the style
부드러운 수채 번짐은 역암 표면의 무수한 구멍을 하나하나 파내지 않고 얼룩과 농담의 차이로 암시한다. 덕분에 바위는 딱딱하면서도 물을 머금은 듯 눅눅해 보인다. 확산된 빛은 두 봉우리 사이 골짜기에 경계 없는 그늘을 만들고, 채도를 낮춘 따뜻한 색조가 회갈색 암벽과 발치의 마른 논빛을 한 계열로 묶어 준다.
