The Standing Stones of Mudeungsan
서석대의 돌기둥
Mudeungsan is the mountain that rises behind Gwangju in southwestern Korea, and near its summit the soft grassy ridges give way to something far more severe: Seoseokdae, a rank of basalt columns split into clean vertical shafts. They formed as ancient lava cooled and contracted, fracturing into five- and six-sided prisms that now lean shoulder to shoulder like a screen of pillars. Broken fragments have piled into a scree slope at their feet, threaded with low scrub and silver grass. The scene is painted empty, the way the ridge looks after the last hikers have gone down.
광주 무등산 정상부 아래, 수직으로 곧게 선 주상절리 무리가 능선을 따라 늘어서 있다. 화산암이 식으면서 갈라진 오각형·육각형 기둥들은 저녁 햇빛을 받으면 병풍처럼 붉게 빛나 서석(瑞石)이라는 이름을 얻었다. 기둥 아래로는 오랜 세월 떨어져 내린 돌조각이 비탈을 이루고, 그 사이로 억새와 관목이 낮게 깔린다. 사람의 발길이 끊긴 시각, 바위는 제 무게만으로 서 있다.
Why this subject
무등산은 흔히 능선의 부드러움으로 이야기되지만, 정상 가까이에서는 전혀 다른 얼굴을 내민다. 수천만 년 전 용암이 식으며 생긴 직선의 결을 사람 없이 그대로 마주 세워 보고 싶었다. 자연이 만든 형태가 건축의 기둥보다 더 건축적으로 보이는 순간을 담으려 했다.
On the style
건축적으로 정확한 형태 묘사가 주상절리에서는 특히 유리하다. 기둥 하나하나의 각진 모서리와 수직 균열선이 흐트러지지 않고 남아, 돌의 구조가 먼저 읽힌다. 그 위에 얹힌 부드러운 수채 번짐은 오랜 풍화로 둥글어진 표면과 이끼 자국을 맡는다. 확산된 빛은 기둥 사이 좁은 틈에 짙은 그늘을 만들지 않고 얕게 스며들어, 돌무리 전체가 하나의 덩어리로 보이게 한다. 낮은 채도의 따뜻한 색조는 회색 안산암에 옅은 황토빛을 더해 저녁 무렵의 잔열을 남긴다.
