Signs Under the Eaves

Ikseon-dong is a dense cluster of 1920s-era hanok — Korean tiled-roof courtyard houses — in central Seoul, now lined with small shops and cafes. This lane is barely wide enough for two people, its stone paving streaked with damp and sprouting grass between the slabs. Carved wooden signboards hang from the beams on both sides, and potted plants sit beside closed doors. Further in, the roofs overlap and dissolve into pale haze.

Why this subject

Ikseon-dong is usually packed with visitors, so I wanted to paint the version of it that exists between crowds — shutters closed, signs still hanging. That in-between state, neither shop nor home, felt like the honest face of the neighborhood.

On the style

Soft watercolor bleeding suits old plaster walls and wet stone, where edges were never crisp to begin with. The rafters and roof tiles keep their exact repeating geometry while the pigment pools around them, giving the timber a water-soaked warmth. Diffused light flattens the damp paving into gentle shifts of tone rather than hard reflections.
