하회 기와골 사이
Hahoe Folk Village in Andong, southeastern Korea, is a settlement of traditional hanok houses still lived in today. Seen from above, the grey tiled roofs overlap in layers, their eaves lifting slightly at the corners and nearly touching those of the house next door. A narrow dirt lane bends between them, edged by dry-stacked stone walls with grass pushing through. Beyond, hills fade into haze while the nearer trees burn orange and yellow.
안동 하회마을의 지붕들이 겹겹이 내려다보이는 자리입니다. 기와골은 회색빛으로 가지런히 흘러내리고, 처마 끝이 살짝 들려 올라간 선이 이웃한 지붕과 맞물립니다. 집과 집 사이로는 흙빛 좁은 길이 굽어 나가고, 돌로 쌓은 축대 아래 풀이 듬성듬성 돋아 있습니다. 뒤편 산자락은 안개에 묻혀 흐릿하고, 그 앞 나무들은 주황과 노랑으로 물들어 가을이 깊어 가는 중임을 알려 줍니다.
Why this subject
Most images of Hahoe show the whole village or the river that loops around it. I wanted the opposite scale — the gap between two roofs, wide enough for one person to pass. Leaving the lane empty lets you imagine everyone who has walked it.
하회마을은 보통 마을 전경이나 강굽이로 기억되지만, 실제로 걸어 보면 눈에 가장 오래 남는 것은 지붕과 지붕 사이의 좁은 틈입니다. 그 틈으로 길이 이어지고 사람이 지나다녔다는 사실을 담고 싶었습니다. 사람을 비우고 길만 남겨 두면, 오히려 그 길을 다닌 시간이 보일 것 같았습니다.
On the style
The soft watercolor bleed keeps each roof tile legible while suggesting the rough, weathered clay of surfaces that have taken decades of rain. Diffused light lays shadows with blurred edges across the packed earth, quietly marking how far each eave reaches. The muted warm palette holds grey tile, white plaster and autumn foliage together without any one of them shouting.
부드러운 수채 번짐은 기와 한 장 한 장의 윤곽을 뭉개지 않으면서도 오래 비바람을 맞은 흙빛 기와의 거친 표면을 살려 냅니다. 확산된 빛은 마당 흙길 위에 경계가 흐린 그림자를 깔아, 처마가 어디까지 뻗어 나왔는지를 조용히 알려 줍니다. 채도를 낮춘 따뜻한 색조는 회색 기와와 흰 회벽, 그리고 뒤편 단풍의 주황을 한 화면 안에서 다투지 않게 묶어 줍니다.
