Tier upon Tier of Eaves

Tier upon Tier of Eaves

Beopjusa is a mountain temple in Songnisan National Park, central Korea, and Palsangjeon is the country's only remaining wooden pagoda of five stories. Here the tiled roofs step outward as they descend, each tier shaded by deep brackets and rafters, with a thin metal finial reaching into a hazy sky. A wooden door sits closed at the center of the stone platform, flanked by latticed windows, and stone lanterns stand in the open earthen courtyard. Low hills fade behind the temple roofs.

Why this subject

A wooden pagoda does something a stone one cannot: it stacks shadow, tier upon tier, under overhanging eaves. I wanted a frontal view that lets those layers speak for themselves. Choosing an empty hour meant the building, not a crowd, sets the scale.

On the style

Architecturally exact drawing keeps every bracket set and rafter legible across every tier, while the watercolor wash across those surfaces reads as weathered, sun-faded timber. The diffused light never lets the eaves fall into black; the shadows stay a soft grey-brown, so the structure remains visible deep under each roof. The muted warm palette ties the dry courtyard, the reddish columns and the grey tiles together, and the hills behind dissolve toward bare paper so the vertical line of the pagoda holds the frame.
