Noon Shade of the Village Tree
정오의 느티나무 그늘
At the entrance to almost every old Korean village stands a single great zelkova, planted generations ago and left to spread until its branches cover half the clearing. Beneath it sits a pyeongsang, a raised wooden platform where neighbors gather to escape the heat. Here it is midday in deep summer: the trunk gnarled at its base, light falling in scattered coins across the packed earth, the platform empty for the hour. The tree does the work of a building, and the shade does the work of a room.
마을 어귀의 공터 한가운데 선 느티나무가 정오의 해를 받아 제 발치에 둥근 그늘을 깔아 놓았다. 수백 년 묵은 줄기는 밑동이 울퉁불퉁 뒤틀렸고, 가지는 사방으로 평평하게 퍼져 마당 절반을 덮는다. 나무 아래 평상은 비어 있고 흙바닥에는 잎 사이로 새어든 빛이 작은 점으로 흩어진다. 한여름 낮, 매미 소리만 남고 사람은 잠시 자리를 비운 시간이다.
Why this subject
느티나무 그늘은 한국 마을에서 가장 오래된 공공장소다. 정자도 담장도 없이 나무 한 그루가 만들어 낸 이 둥근 영역이 어떻게 사람을 불러 모으는 자리가 되었는지, 정작 아무도 없는 시간에 더 잘 보인다고 생각했다. 금요일의 계절·날씨 주제로 한여름 정오의 더위와 그 더위를 피하는 방식을 한 장면에 담고 싶었다.
On the style
부드러운 수채 질감은 느티나무 수피의 갈라진 결과 평상 널빤지의 닳은 면을 선으로 긋지 않고 번짐의 농도 차이로 드러낸다. 확산된 빛은 정오의 수직광을 날카로운 대비 대신 잎 그늘의 중첩으로 바꾸어, 흙바닥에 떨어지는 반점들의 경계를 흐리게 만든다. 채도를 낮춘 따뜻한 색조가 마른 황토 바닥과 초록이 바랜 여름 잎을 같은 온도 안에 묶어 한낮의 나른함을 만든다.
