Before the Table Is Set
Sirutteok is a Korean rice cake steamed in an earthenware siru, built from alternating bands of rice flour and sweetened red bean. It turns up at house-blessing rites and hundredth-day celebrations, which means it is almost always painted surrounded by people. This still life keeps the cake alone on a bare table, next to a bojagi — the square cloth Koreans use to wrap and carry food — folded four times and gone soft at the corners. Diffused window light pools in the creases and leaves the cut layers just legible.
Why this subject
On the style
