An Afternoon West of the Palace
서촌 골목의 오후
Seochon is a low-rise residential quarter tucked between Gyeongbokgung Palace and Inwangsan mountain in central Seoul. Walk one block off the busy market street and you find lanes like this one, where traditional tile-roofed hanok walls sit directly against brick houses built in the 1970s. Potted plants crowd the top of a garden wall; overhead wires cross the narrow strip of sky. The alley slopes upward and curves away, empty, holding the late afternoon light on a single face of stone.
경복궁 서쪽, 인왕산 자락으로 이어지는 서촌의 주택가 골목이다. 한옥의 낮은 기와 담장과 그 사이에 끼어든 1970년대 붉은 벽돌 이층집이 한 화면에 나란히 서 있고, 담장 위로는 누군가 내놓은 화분과 전선이 지나간다. 사람은 보이지 않고 골목은 완만한 오르막으로 휘어져 끝이 보이지 않는다. 오후의 빛이 담벼락 한쪽 면만 데우고 나머지는 그늘에 남겨 두었다.

서촌은 관광지로 소비되는 통인시장과 카페 거리가 유명하지만, 한 블록만 안으로 들어가면 여전히 사람이 사는 골목이 그대로 남아 있다. 그 안쪽의 평범한 오후를 그리고 싶었다. 한옥과 벽돌집이 아무렇지 않게 붙어 선 풍경이야말로 이 동네가 지나온 시간의 두께라고 생각했다.

수채 번짐은 오래된 시멘트 담벼락의 얼룩과 기와의 이끼 자국에 특히 잘 맞는다. 물감이 마르며 남긴 경계가 실제 벽의 물때처럼 보이도록 두었다. 채도를 낮춘 따뜻한 색조는 붉은 벽돌과 기와의 회색을 한 온도로 묶어 주고, 확산된 빛은 골목 끝 오르막 쪽으로 갈수록 대비를 잃으며 흐려진다. 2:3 세로 화면은 좁은 골목의 폭과 담장 위로 열린 하늘을 동시에 담기 위한 선택이다.
