The Hall That Faces East

The Hall That Faces East

Changgyeonggung, one of the five grand palaces of Seoul, holds a building older than any other throne hall in Korea: Myeongjeongjeon, rebuilt in 1616 and never replaced. Where other palace halls rise in two tiers and face south, this one sits low under a single hipped-and-gabled roof and looks east, so the first light of the day enters straight through its central bay. Flagstones pave the courtyard in front, split by the raised ceremonial path, with long roofed corridors closing the space on either side. Nothing moves here in the painting — only the aged red pillars and the shade gathered beneath the bracket sets.

Why this subject

On the style
