Bare Timber Beneath Dalmasan
달마산 아래 대웅보전
Mihwangsa is a Buddhist temple in Haenam, near the southernmost point of mainland Korea, tucked below the serrated rock ridge of Dalmasan. Unlike most Korean temple halls, its Daeungbojeon has never been repainted in recent memory, so the columns and lattice doors show raw grain worn smooth by sea wind. Carvings of crabs and turtles on its stone base hint at the temple's founding legend, which tells of Buddhism arriving here by boat. The courtyard is empty, the light flat and even, and the mountain behind holds its grey silence.
해남 땅끝 가까이, 달마산 바위 능선이 병풍처럼 둘러선 자리에 미황사 대웅보전이 앉아 있다. 단청을 새로 입히지 않아 나뭇결이 그대로 드러난 기둥과 문살은 바닷바람에 오래 씻긴 빛을 띤다. 주춧돌에는 게와 거북이 새겨져 있어, 이 절이 바다를 통해 들어온 내력을 말없이 증언한다. 법당 앞마당은 비어 있고, 뒤쪽 암봉만 흐린 하늘에 잿빛으로 솟아 있다.
Why this subject
단청이 벗겨진 건물은 보통 낡았다고 여겨지지만, 미황사 대웅보전의 맨 나무는 오히려 세월이 칠한 다른 색처럼 보인다. 그 퇴색을 결함이 아니라 재질로 그리고 싶었다. 또한 남도 끝자락의 절이 산과 바다 사이에 어떻게 끼어 앉았는지, 건물 하나만이 아니라 배경의 바위 능선까지 한 화면에 담아 보여주려 했다.

낮은 채도의 따뜻한 색조는 단청이 지워진 목재의 회갈색과 잘 맞아, 나뭇결이 마른 흙빛으로 가라앉는다. 수채 번짐은 달마산 바위 능선의 거친 절리를 안개 속으로 부드럽게 풀어 놓으면서도, 공포와 서까래의 짜임은 건축적 정확도를 유지한다. 확산된 빛은 처마 밑에 짙은 그늘을 만들지 않고 얕게 스며, 빈 앞마당의 마사토가 고르게 밝다.
