Stone Terrace Under Dalmasan
달마산 아래 대웅보전
This is Daeungbojeon, the main worship hall of Mihwangsa, a Buddhist temple near the southwestern tip of mainland Korea in Haenam. The hall rests on a tall platform of stacked stone, reached by a central flight of steps, and the jagged ridge of Dalmasan rises close behind it. Under the curved tiled roof, the painted bracket work has weathered into muted greens and reds, and the latticed wooden doors across the front stand closed. Low tiled walls and pines frame the swept earth of the courtyard.
해남 땅끝 가까이, 달마산 바위 능선을 등지고 앉은 미황사 대웅보전이다. 돌로 쌓아 올린 높은 기단 위에 팔작지붕이 얹혀 있고, 처마 아래 단청은 오랜 세월에 색이 가라앉아 초록과 붉은빛이 희미하게 남았다. 정면 칸마다 띠살문이 닫혀 있고 가운데 문 앞 계단 아래로 마당의 마른 흙이 넓게 펼쳐진다. 마당 양쪽 낮은 기와 담장과 소나무가 건물을 감싸듯 둘러선다.
Why this subject
Mihwangsa is hard to picture without its mountain — the bare rock spine of Dalmasan presses right up behind the roofline, and the two belong in one frame. I wanted a straight-on view from the courtyard, at an hour when no one crosses it, so the eye can read the stone platform, the hall, and the ridge as three stacked layers.
산사를 그릴 때 흔히 법당만 크게 담지만, 미황사는 뒤에 선 달마산이 없으면 설명되지 않는 절이다. 바위가 드러난 능선과 그 아래 단정하게 앉은 기와지붕을 한 화면에 같이 두고 싶었다. 사람이 지나가지 않는 시간의 마당을 정면에서 바라보는 자리를 골랐다.
On the style
The watercolor bleed does its heaviest work on the mountain, dissolving rock and scrub into a single pale gray-brown mass that recedes while the roof tiles and brackets hold their drawn edges. Diffused light leaves only shallow shadows in the joints of the stone platform and across the packed earth. The low-saturation warm palette lets that bare ground and the aged wood of the doors settle into the same quiet temperature.
수채 번짐은 달마산 능선에서 가장 크게 작용한다. 바위와 수목의 경계가 풀어지면서 산 전체가 한 겹의 옅은 회갈색 덩어리로 물러나고, 그 앞의 기와골과 공포는 또렷한 선으로 남아 거리감이 생긴다. 확산된 빛은 기단 돌 틈과 마당 흙에 얕은 그림자만 남겨, 낮은 채도의 따뜻한 색조가 다져진 흙바닥과 오래된 목재 문짝에서 같은 온도로 만난다.
