놋그릇 둘과 조각보
Two brass bowls — one small and forward, one larger and set behind — rest on a patchwork cloth spread across a weathered wooden shelf. The cloth is a bojagi, a Korean wrapping and covering textile pieced from fabric scraps and quilted along the seams; here floral squares sit beside plain ones, and one corner hangs over the shelf's edge. The brass carries faint hammer marks and the dull patches of long polishing, catching a pale highlight inside each bowl. Behind it all, a rough plaster wall absorbs the light without reflecting it.
흙벽 앞 나무 선반 위에 조각보가 깔리고, 그 위에 놋그릇 두 개가 놓였다. 작은 것이 앞쪽, 큰 것이 뒤쪽에 비스듬히 자리해 두 그릇의 전이 서로 겹치지 않고 나란히 보인다. 조각보는 네모 조각들을 잇고 누빈 것으로, 꽃무늬가 든 조각과 민무늬 조각이 섞여 있고 한쪽 모서리가 선반 아래로 늘어져 있다. 놋쇠 표면에는 두드린 자국과 오래 닦인 얼룩이 함께 남아 희고 부드러운 빛을 받는다.
Why this subject
Korean yugi brassware is the centerpiece of a formal table, yet it spends most of the year wrapped in cloth and stored away. I wanted to paint that in-between state — the vessels out and ready, but not yet used. Placing them on a bojagi made of leftover scraps puts two kinds of household thrift side by side.
유기(놋그릇)는 밥상 위에서 가장 먼저 눈에 띄는 물건이면서도, 쓰이지 않을 때에는 보자기에 싸여 조용히 보관되는 기물이다. 그 '쓰이기 전'과 '쓰고 난 뒤' 사이의 시간을 그리고 싶었다. 조각보의 자투리 천들이 그릇의 매끈한 곡면과 만나는 지점에서, 살림살이가 쌓아 온 손때를 보려 했다.
On the style
Soft watercolor bleed suits brass better than crisp linework would; drawn sharply, metal reflections turn hard and glassy, but letting pigment pool lets the polished and clouded areas merge the way a well-used bowl actually looks. The diffused light leaves only a faint bright spot inside each bowl and lets the shadow under the shelf fade out without an edge. The muted warm palette binds the cloth's rose and ochre patches to the beige of the wall, so nothing in the frame competes with the brass.
수채 번짐은 놋쇠에 특히 잘 맞는다. 금속의 반사는 선으로 그으면 날카로워지지만, 물감이 번지게 두면 닦인 자리와 흐려진 자리가 자연스럽게 섞여 오래 쓴 그릇의 표면이 된다. 확산된 빛은 그릇 안쪽 바닥에 희미한 밝은 점만 남기고, 선반 아래로 번지는 그림자도 경계 없이 흐려진다. 채도를 낮춘 따뜻한 색조 덕분에 조각보의 분홍과 황토 조각이 흙벽의 베이지와 한 가족처럼 묶인다.
